NSFAS Voucher Declined
Here’s Why Your NSFAS Application Was Rejected
Students have been able to see whether their application has been approved or not. If their application was unsuccessful, it may have been due to the following reasons.
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has started informing students about their application status. Unfortunately, the number of applications were declined, however, NSFAS has given more insight into the reasons for these decisions.
NSFAS has provided the possible reasons behind applications being declined and they are as follows:
- Third-party checks were done on students’ household income and saw that their household income was above the required threshold of R350 000 or R600 000 for people with a disability.
- Students who registered at a university before 2018 did not meet the R122 000 household income threshold.
- Students have exceeded the number of years NSFAS is able to fund them according to the N+ rule.
- It is important to further note that, the N+ rule is not based on the number of years that a student has been funded, but on the number of years that the student has been registered for tertiary study at any public university in South Africa.
- Continuing students may have failed to meet the academic requirements and therefore their funding was discontinued.
These students are welcome to submit an appeal if they feel that they do meet the requirements and have additional information explaining why they require funding.
Appeals have not yet been opened but NSFAS will communicate with students as soon as the appeals are open.
NSFAS is a government-funded bursary that receives its funding from and reports to the Department of Higher Education and Training. The bursary covers the majority of the costs associated with studying.
South African citizens and permanent residents are eligible for funding as long as they meet the set criteria and intend to study at a public university or TVET College.
The bursary covers students for the entire duration of their course or degree, provided that they continue to meet the academic requirements.
